dirty truth about drinking water

The Dirty Truth about your Drinking Water

Tiempo de lectura: 6 minutos

Though I have studied water for many years, I have diligently spent the past six months deepening my understanding of our hydration needs, our drinking water quality, and the latest water cleaning technologies. The state of our drinking water is so shocking that I have invested a huge amount of money on improving the water that my family and I drink. I have thrown out all the plastic containers from our household. I knew things were not good, but this is the first time that environmental toxins have really worried me.

You may have heard that about 70% of a healthy body is water. After oxygen, water is your most urgent survival need. In survival training, we learn about the “rule of 3”; you can only live for 3 minutes without air, 3 days without water, and over 3 weeks without food. These are estimates, but the importance of water is obvious.

WHY DO WE REALLY NEED WATER?

water

Did you ever stop to think about this? I have heard varied answers such as; “to fill our blood”, “it keeps our brains healthy”, “for keeping us cool”, “to lubricate our joints”, “so we can excrete toxins”, and even “for healthy sperm”. While all of these are correct, water is best seen as your body’s transport system.

You already know that the health of your body is managed by your brain. You know that the innate intelligence in your body is organised through the messages flowing in your nervous system… that is why we look after our spines properly if we want to age well. This is the fastest and most important transport system in your body…the transport of electrical messages. It is wonderful, spectacular, a thing of absolute awe.

However, when your brain stimulates the release of certain hormones, when you receive nutrition through your gut wall, or when the white blood cells produced in your bone marrow need to get to the infected part of your body to fight germs, your body needs another transport system. That transport system is a lot slower, but it too is very important. It is water.

When we see water as delivery vans, ready to transport goods around our body, we start to understand the real purpose of hydration, and we can reap life-long health rewards.

THE DIRTY TRUTH ABOUT YOUR DRINKING WATER IS THAT IT IS DIRTY, POLLUTED, AND YET LABELLED “SAFE” TO DRINK.

If you search on the Internet, “dirty truth about your drinking water” you will find thousands of pages about this topic. The local water authorities may say your drinking water is safe. That means that it will cause no immediate illness, for example by infecting you with untreated bacteria. In this respect yes, most tap water in Europe, and certainly in Spain, is “safe”. Good quality data about water cleanliness is suspiciously difficult to get hold of, even in so-called “developed countries.

What was “safe” in 2015 was 20,000 times more contaminated than what is “safe” today(1)… that is clearly nonsense. BPA contamination was never safe!

The water standards are continuously being updated as we find ever more toxins. Let’s skim the surface of this topic (pun intended).

WHAT CAN YOU FIND IN YOUR DRINKING WATER:

  • CHLORINE
  • FLUORIDE
  • DIRT (STUFF THAT DISSOLVED IN THE WATER)
  • GLYPHOSATE, OTHER HERBICIDES AND PESTICIDES, AND FERTILISERS.
  • PFAS, AND OTHER COMMON CHEMICALS
  • HORMONES AND HORMONE DISRUPTORS
  • DRUGS- GET HIGH ON YOUR OWN WATER SUPPLY
  • MICROPLASTICS

PEOPLE WITH MICROPLASTICS ARE 4.5 TIMES MORE LIKELY TO SUFFER STROKE, HEART ATTACK, OR DEATH.(2)

Surely these toxin levels are so low that it really doesn’t make a difference?

I used to believe this, that we could easily adapt to these toxic stressors. And the answer is yes, we can absolutely survive these chemical stressors. But surviving is not thriving. If you live a wellness lifestyle or a chiropractic lifestyle, you want to thrive… you want to feel and be your best. As this report goes to press, the Endocrine Society has just issued a 112-page report which clearly states that there is no safe dose of thousands of these contaminants, many of which found in our drinking water. (3) Most of us should drink over 80,000 litres of water in our lives. The position is clear; pesticides, plastics, forever chemicals and others are a threat to human health, and there is no safe level.(4) Despite this, it is practically impossible to totally avoid the toxins we discussed in the last section. The most effective way to radically reduce your toxic load is to simply drink totally clean water.

Toxins and how they can damage your spine

There are two ways in which your nutritional status or toxic load can damage your spine. The first concerns your general physical state, your general ability to heal. The benefit to improving your health through nutrition is obvious. If you drink too much alcohol, smoke, or eat junk food, the severity of your subluxations increases, and it is more difficult for the inflammation around the subluxations to settle.(5)  If you don’t drink enough water, recovering from vertebral subluxations takes longer and is more uncomfortable. If you have insufficient sunlight exposure and vitamin D, your whole nervous system is in a state of stress and defence.

The second concerns how toxic loads can irritate your nervous system. We live in a world which is loaded with toxic stress. Microplastics or mercury in our fish supplies, pesticides on our fruits, caffeine or alcohol, sugars, medications, chlorinated water, cosmetics, cleaning agents, air pollution—the list is endless. Your nervous system perceives these non-physical stressors to be threatening and directs your muscles to react, defend, and brace your body. This factor in vertebral subluxation is harder to recognise and often takes longer to improve.

A decreased intake of water can have adverse effects on both mental and physical performance, potentially resulting in symptoms such as dizziness and fatigue. Moreover, the connective tissues within the spine are directly influenced by daily water intake. Insufficient hydration may lead to reduced strength and flexibility in the body’s ligaments, affecting their ability to hold the adjustment to your spine. This could affect how long the vertebra will stay in place and therefore possibly requiring more frequent chiropractic adjustments. Hence, ensuring adequate hydration is essential for optimal responsiveness to chiropractic care.

BOTTLED WATER WILL CLOG YOUR ARTERIES WITH PLASTICS

Where do we start? Only a few decades ago, the idea of buying bottled water was a joke. But some wise person then told us that bottled water was cleaner than tap water. Oh, and that we needed the minerals in those bottles, as if our food did not have any minerals. Though it is true that the mineral content of our food is decreasing at a disturbing rate(6), our mineral intake should still principally be in the form of unprocessed foods. It was with this marketing hype that the now 300 billion-dollar water bottle industry was born. Recent news reports say that we consume a credit card’s worth of plastic every week!!!

In some instances, where there is no water treatment, bottled water might have helped us. However we must face two facts:

  1. Bottling water is an environmental catastrophe.
  2. Bottled water is about as dirty, as toxically contaminated, as anything you will find.(7)

SUMMARY

Tap water is always dirty and polluted to some extent. Firstly, this affects its transport capacity, meaning it is like having partly full delivery vans in your body. Many of those pollutants are also carcinogenic, hormone- disrupting, and a whole lot more. Whether that pollution is sufficient to cause you a visible disease depends on your individual situation. Indeed you may already have an illness which has been caused or worsened by the quality of your drinking water. If you take your health and your family’s health seriously, then you should also take the cleanliness of your drinking water seriously.
