Though I have studied water for many years, I have diligently spent the past six months deepening my understanding of our hydration needs, our drinking water quality, and the latest water cleaning technologies. The state of our drinking water is so shocking that I have invested a huge amount of money on improving the water that my family and I drink. I have thrown out all the plastic containers from our household. I knew things were not good, but this is the first time that environmental toxins have really worried me.

You may have heard that about 70% of a healthy body is water. After oxygen, water is your most urgent survival need. In survival training, we learn about the “rule of 3”; you can only live for 3 minutes without air, 3 days without water, and over 3 weeks without food. These are estimates, but the importance of water is obvious.

WHY DO WE REALLY NEED WATER?

dirty truth about your drinking water

Did you ever stop to think about this? I have heard varied answers such as; “to fill our blood”, “it keeps our brains healthy”, “for keeping us cool”, “to lubricate our joints”, “so we can excrete toxins”, and even “for healthy sperm”. While all of these are correct, water is best seen as your body’s transport system.

You already know that the health of your body is managed by your brain. You know that the innate intelligence in your body is organised through the messages flowing in your nervous system… that is why we look after our spines properly if we want to age well. This is the fastest and most important transport system in your body…the transport of electrical messages. It is wonderful, spectacular, a thing of absolute awe.

However, when your brain stimulates the release of certain hormones, when you receive nutrition through your gut wall, or when the white blood cells produced in your bone marrow need to get to the infected part of your body to fight germs, your body needs another transport system. That transport system is a lot slower, but it too is very important. It is water.

When we see water as delivery vans, ready to transport goods around our body, we start to understand the real purpose of hydration, and we can reap life-long health rewards.

THE DIRTY TRUTH ABOUT YOUR DRINKING WATER IS THAT IT IS DIRTY, POLLUTED, AND YET LABELLED “SAFE” TO DRINK.

If you search on the Internet, “dirty truth about your drinking water” you will find thousands of pages about this topic. The local water authorities may say your drinking water is safe. That means that it will cause no immediate illness, for example by infecting you with untreated bacteria. In this respect yes, most tap water in Europe, and certainly in Spain, is “safe”. Good quality data about water cleanliness is suspiciously difficult to get hold of, even in so-called “developed countries.

What was “safe” in 2015 was 20,000 times more contaminated than what is “safe” today(1)… that is clearly nonsense. BPA contamination was never safe!

The water standards are continuously being updated as we find ever more toxins. Let’s skim the surface of this topic (pun intended).

WHAT CAN YOU FIND IN YOUR DRINKING WATER:

PEOPLE WITH MICROPLASTICS ARE 4.5 TIMES MORE LIKELY TO SUFFER STROKE, HEART ATTACK, OR DEATH.(2)

BOTTLED WATER WILL CLOG YOUR ARTERIES WITH PLASTICS

Where do we start? Only a few decades ago, the idea of buying bottled water was a joke. But some wise person then told us that bottled water was cleaner than tap water. Oh, and that we needed the minerals in those bottles, as if our food did not have any minerals. Though it is true that the mineral content of our food is decreasing at a disturbing rate(3), our mineral intake should still principally be in the form of unprocessed foods. It was with this marketing hype that the now 300 billion-dollar water bottle industry was born. Recent news reports say that we consume a credit card’s worth of plastic every week!!!

In some instances, where there is no water treatment, bottled water might have helped us. However we must face two facts:

  1. Bottling water is an environmental catastrophe.
  2. Bottled water is about as dirty, as toxically contaminated, as anything you will find.(4)

SUMMARY

Tap water is always dirty and polluted to some extent. Firstly, this affects its transport capacity, meaning it is like having partly full delivery vans in your body. Many of those pollutants are also carcinogenic, hormone- disrupting, and a whole lot more. Whether that pollution is sufficient to cause you a visible disease depends on your individual situation. Indeed you may already have an illness which has been caused or worsened by the quality of your drinking water. If you take your health and your family’s health seriously, then you should also take the cleanliness of your drinking water seriously.

In my latest published water guide book (here’s the link if you wish to purchase)  you’ll find more details information about the above and also the following:
